PREPARATION
Actors should come prepared with one contemporary monologue. Actors might be asked for an additional contrasting monologue or a song (a cappella) in the room.

Casting BREAKDOWN

Cara Mia’s 24th Season – includes 13 roles with ages ranging from 18 to mid-60's. Auditions will additionally act as consideration for any upcoming work-shopped readings/ productions.

SWIMMING WHILE DROWNING

Angelo and Mila are fifteen and homeless. Angelo is a dreamer, Mila is a street-wise hustler, but when they become roommates at a shelter for LGBTQ teens, they build a fragile bond that inspires them to reach for understanding and self-acceptance. Emilio Rodriguez’s poetic coming-of-age story explores the journey about the angst of coming out and the healing power of hope. 

Rehearsals begin: November 5, 2019

THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET

Esperanza's story is the experience of so many Mexican-American girls during the stage of life between childhood and adolescence. We see her rush into the innocent games, fantasies and friendships of childhood, yet she begins to become conscious of the dangers and contradictions of being a young women living in the barrio. Esperanza tries to make sense of her place in the world while observing the lives of the women around her and decides her life is going to be different. 

Rehearsals begin: January 14, 2020
Performances run: February 20 - March 8, 2020  

Young Esperanza – adult actor who portrays about twelve 
Older Esperanza - in her mid-to-late thirties

My Red Hand, My Black Hand

(Co-Produced with Soul Rep Theatre)

Part of Cara Mía Theatre and Soul Rep Theatre's Café / Negro Series, this play unfolds as a teenager describes the past, present and future of her parents' cultures and their fusion into her own. She tells us about the "Red" Tlingit and Lakota parentage of her father, who leaves the reservation to play blues rock in Boston, and the "Black" rural Virginia background of her mother, who goes to Boston seeking the big-city life. Her parents meet at a dance and fall in love, but not without the complications of prejudice from their families. 

Rehearsals begin: April 21, 2020
Performances run: May 15 - May 31, 2020

Daughter – Mixed race – Native and Black. Aged late teens to twenties
Father - Native American, late fifties to mid-sixties
Mother – Black, late fifties to mid-sixties
